Engagement strategy

Somebody asks for the engagement rate and everybody nods, and then three people in the meeting are silently using three different definitions. That is the state of the art in most companies.

Part 1

Engagement rate is not one number

It can mean interactions over followers, over reach, over posts, or over active members, and those produce wildly different figures from identical activity. None is wrong. Reporting one without saying which is what causes the confusion.

Do this: Write your definition down in one sentence, in the report itself. If you cannot, you are not measuring anything.

Part 2

Second post rate predicts everything

Of the people who post once, how many post again? That single number tells you whether your onboarding works, whether the room is welcoming, and whether growth compounds or leaks. Almost nobody tracks it.

Do this: Pull everyone who posted for the first time three months ago and check how many posted since. That percentage is your real health score.

Part 3

Rituals beat campaigns

A weekly thread people expect outperforms any one-off event, because it removes the decision about when to show up. Structure is what lets a room survive its founders getting busy, and it costs nothing to start.

Do this: Start one thing that happens on the same day every week. Run it for eight weeks before judging it.

Part 4

Churn is normal and should be reported

A share of every cohort goes quiet within months. Communities that report only totals hide this and then cannot explain why a room of ten thousand feels empty. Naming churn is what lets you do something about it.

Do this: Report active members and churn alongside totals. A number that can go down is the only kind that carries information.

This is teaching material and our own reading of standard practice, not advice for your specific community. Check anything important with your own specialist before you act on it.
